Prekmurje is a historic region in North-East Slovenia, along the Mura River and bordering three countries. It has a distinct cuisine and culture from the rest of Slovenia, making it an interesting destination for food-lovers and travellers. A big part of Prekmurje's cultural heritage is the cuisine, which mixes several centuries and different cultures into distinct delicacies. Although, most of the prominent dishes were only served at special events like weddings in the past, we can now find them year-round in restaurants and shops. One of the ideas of local chefs is to offer traditional dishes with modern trends. The exceptional hospitality of the locals, with the added folklore and the beautiful nature, make Prekmurje a hidden gem in the heart of Europe.
The Association for the Promotion and Protection of Prekmurje Specialities registered the brand »DIŠI PO PREKMURJU« (SCENT OF PREKMURJE) in 1999, to promote and protect the region's culinary specialities. The Prekmurje region is mostly known for its two distinct delicacies: the »Prekmurska gibanica« (Prekmurje layer cake) and »Prekmurska šunka« (Prekmurje ham). There are of course, other regional products, like pumpkin oil, vinegars, natural juices, honey and organic produce. The products are produced and processed in the region, ensuring high quality, traceability and control. The branding system is open and any provider, that meets the prescribed quality criteria, can join. This way, the brand is continuously upgrading, improving its quality and expanding the range of products it offers.
